North of the River Tyne In Bamburgh however, Saxon Bernicia survived under a succession of High Reeves and while they were largely left to get on with it, the Danes occasionally swept through in destructive raids.
With the last Saxon king of Northumbria dead the Vikings placed a puppet king on the throne and the once great kingdom of Northumbria was now under Viking rule.

875AD. Halfdan entered the River Tyne and destroyed Tynemouth Priory, before overwintering in the mouth of the River Team near Gateshead.

876AD. In the spring Halfdan began his campaign In Bernicia and Scotland. The monastery town of Hexham was ransacked and the promotory at Tynemouth was turned into a Danish stronghold. Apart from these bouts of destruction, Bernicia under Norse rule seems to have escaped Danish settlement.

878AD. Deira / York under Norse rule.
