Puppet Kings of Northumbria under Viking Rule

With the last Saxon king of Northumbria dead the Vikings placed a puppet king on the throne and the once great kingdom of Northumbria was now under Viking rule.

867-872AD. Ecberht I - Viking puppet king - Northumbria

872-876AD. Ricsige - Viking puppet king - Northumbria

876-878AD. Ecgberht II - Viking puppet king - Northumbria

878AD. Viking kings in Deira / York ( lands south of the river Wear)

High-Reeves of Bamburgh

North of the Tyne in Bamburgh however, Saxon Bernicia survived and while they are largely left to get on with it, the Danes occasional swept through in destructive raids.

875AD. Halfdan entered the River Tyne and destroyed Tynemouth Priory before over wintering in the mouth of the River Team near Gateshead.

876AD. In the spring Halfdan began his campaign in Bernicia and Scotland. The Monastery town of Hexham was ransacked and the promontory at Tynemouth was turned into Danish stronghold. Apart from that Bernicia under Norse rule seemed to have escaped Danish settlement.
