789AD. Osred II - Northumbria
789AD. Osred II son of Ealhred came to the throne as a boy when his Uncle, Aelfwald I, was murdered.
Despite his youth he was instrumental in bringing together the two opposing camps in Northumbria. Little good did it do him, he was deposed after only a year in power and was tonsured and forced to flee to the Isle of Man.
Aethelred I (formerly deposed himself), took his place on the throne.
792AD. Osred II returned to the kingdom, but was captured at Maryport in Cumbria and beheaded. Most likely on orders of Aethelred. Osred was burried at Tynemouth Priory.
The date of the killing was reported in 'The Anglo Saxon Chonicle' as follows, "Apprehended and slain on the Eighteenth day before the calends of October. his body is deposited at Tynemouth"
