810AD. Eanred - Northumbria

810AD. Eanred came to the throne at the death of his father Eardwulf and there is not a lot of information regarding his reign. However, coinage of the times suggests that Eardwulf may have ruled for much longer than previously thoght and Eanred's reign would have started at a later date. Never the less, despite the turbulent times Eanred must have been a clever and powerful ruler as he reigned for many years.

829AD. Eanred faced the biggest threat to his throne when Ecgberht of Wessex intent on subduing Northumbria, led an army through newly conquered Mercia. The two sides met at Dore (Near Sheffied) on the Northumbrian / Mercian border and Ecgberht offered Eanred terms of obedience and submission. The terms were accepted and both parties went home.

The acceptance of Ecgberht as overlord probably meant little, as from then on Ecgberht was busy with the Mercians and the Vikings down south.

830AD. Due to increased Viking raids the monks of Lindisfarne were forced to leave the island with the coffin of St Cuthbert. They moved inland away from the coast and built a church at Norham on the Tweed as a shrine for the Saint.

841AD. After a reign of at least 30 years (no mean feat in those turbulent times), Eanred died and was succeeded by his son Aethelred II.
