737AD. Eadberht - Northumbria

737AD. Eadberht became king when his cousin Ceolwulf abdicated.

740AD. Eardwine was killed presumably in an attempted coup. Eadberht went war with the Picts and it maybe because king Oengus of the picts was backing Eardwine in his bid.

While Eadberht was on campaign in the north Ćthelbald of mercia took the opportunity to ravage the southern parts of Northumbria these attacks may have continued into 741 when York was burnt.

750AD. Eadberht fought Dumnagual of Strathclyde to gain the Plains of Kyle.

756AD. Eadberht in allience with Oengus mac Fergusa went against Dumnagual again and successfully forced a treaty with the Britons at Altcuith (Dumbarton). But ten days later, after they had marched from Ouania (Govan) things changed and almost all of their army was wiped out in a battle that took place at Niwanbirig. (Possibly Newbrough near Hexham).

According to the “Historia Regum Anglorum”

“In the year from our lords incarnation 756 King Eadberht, in the eighteenth year of his reign, and Unjust, king of the Picts, led an army to the town of Altcuith and hence the Britons accepted terms there, on the first day of the month of august. But on the tenth day of the same month perished almost the entire army which he led from Ouania to Niwanbirig that is the new city”.

758AD. Eadberht abdicated, handed over the throne to his son Oswulf and entered the monastery at York.

768AD. Eadberht died and was buried in the porch of the cathedral.
