656AD. Alchfrith the son of Oswiu and his wife Rieinmelth of Rheged became sub king of Deira under the lordship of his father.
Alchfrith was married to Penda Of Mercia's daughter Cyneburh
.
Alchfrith a supporter of the roman church, gave the Monastery of Rippon to Wilfrid, where he introduced the Roman Ways.
663AD. Alchfrith was invited to accompany Wilfrid to Rome, but Oswiu vetoed the idea.
664 Alchfrith supported Wilfrid against his father in the Synod of Whitby. Alchfrith last act was to send Wilfrid to Gaul to be consecrated, after that he disappeared from the records.
It was thought that he may have attempted to overthrow his father and take control of the whole of Northumbria and had been killed in the attempt.
It maybe that he was killed in battle, or as some speculate, fled into exile in his mothers country of Rheged. and took up the cloth.
