779AD. Aelfwald I - Northumbria
779AD. Aelfwald I, son of Oswulf, took the throne after banishing Aethelred I, from the kingdom.
During his reign Aelfwald I was opposed by Oswald a supporter of Aethelred I. The opposition only ceased when Osbald fled, like so many before him, to Pictland.
788AD. Aelfwald I was murdered at Chesters by Earldorman Sicga, probably at the instigation of Aethered I and Osbald. He was buried inside the church at Hexham and was immediately considered as a Saint. He was succeeded by his cousin Osred.
