963AD. Waltheof - High Reeve - Bamburgh

 

963AD. Waltheof became High-Reeve of Bamburgh at the death of his father Osulf.

 

 
993AD.The Norse Olaf Tryggvasson ravaged the lands of Northumbria and sacked Bamburgh. Three times he attacked the castle from the sea and was repulsed. On the forth time however, his attack was successful and he left the the castle in ruins.

 

994AD.Waltheoff appeared briefly at the English court following the attack of the year before.

 

995AD. Waltheof’s son Uchtred helped to clear the land for the cathederal to be built at Durham. Uchtred also married Bishop Aldhun’s daughter, Ecgfrida.

 

1006AD. Waltheof was now too old to leave Bamburgh and he allowed King Malcolm II of Scotland to travel the length of Bernica unmolested and besiege Durham. It was left to his son Uchtred to raise an army, defeat the Scots and send them back from whence they came.

Ethelred II ( The unready) was so pleased with the outcome of the battle that he made Uchtred Earldorman of Bernica even though his father was still alive.
